A new, annual National Stamp Celebration Day, held in association with The Philatelic Traders’ Society, is being launched this year to celebrate and promote philately. The celebration will be held on 4 May to commemorate the world’s first ever adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, which was issued on 1 May 1840 but officially used from 6 May.
**Stanley Gibbons invites you to celebrate this historic artifact with 20% OFF all items in store, with the exception of bullion items and Pink Zone items. As well as this, you can post any letter from our shop on the 4th – 6th May (standard letter sizes only – no packages).**
The aim of this new National Stamp Celebration Day is to increase awareness of the hobby and to engage people in one of the UK’s most important inventions. To launch National Stamp Celebration Day, The Royal Philatelic Society London (RPSL) – the oldest existing philatelic society in the world – will be opening its doors to welcome non-members.
This opportunity will give people the chance to bring in their ‘Stamps in the Attic’ collections and have them reviewed by a philatelic expert. Frank Walton, President of the RPSL, commented:
‘We are absolutely delighted to be taking part in launching National Stamp Celebration Day and inviting people into The Royal. It is important to us to increase the awareness for the hobby and to showcase what we do as a Society. We have a wonderful history and are excited to share that.’
The RPSL will open from 10a.m.–4p.m. on 4 May, but it is strictly by application only. To secure your place contact firstname.lastname@example.org
