WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1888 SG98/102 Essay
1888 (July 19) original De La Rue handpainted artist's essay for a proposed undenominated keyplate (for use with 4d, 6d and 1s duties) to replace the old Perkins Bacon engraved plates, executed stamp-size in the type 15 design subsequently adopted, in carmine with inscription and ornaments in Chinese white and simulated perforations in pencil, on tracing paper (44x51mm). Lettered 'A' in red at upper left corner, with pencil endorsement below. A highly important essay ex Da La Rue archives, unique in private hands (with the similar essay on card now in the Royal Philatelic Collection), illustrated on pl. 29.7 of Easton's 'De La Rue History' and on p.6540 of 'The De La Rue Collection'. The proposal for the undenominated keyplate was accepted by the PMG (in a letter to the Colonial Secretary) on Sept 11th 1888, and duty plates were subsequently prepared for the 4d, 6d and 1s values on Jan 18 1889 and later for the 21/2d and 5d (on Feb 2 1892).
