WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1888 SG96 Essay
1888 (July 19) original De La Rue handpainted artist's essay for a proposed new 2d unified plate to replace the old Perkins Bacon engraved plate, executed stamp-size in the type 14 design as subsequently adopted, in grey with details in Chinese white and simulated perforations in pencil, on tracing paper (59x53mm). Lettered 'B' in red at upper left corner (the type 15 keyplate essay having been submitted on the same day with 'A' notation), with pencil date at upper right. A unique and important essay, ex De La Rue archives, illustrated on pl.29.8 of Easton's 'De La Rue History' and on p.6540 of 'The De La Rue Collection'. The design was approved on Nov 2 1888 and the die and plate made in Jan 1889, although the type 14 2d stamps were not actually issued until Aug 1890.
