WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1864 SG55b Used

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1864 SG55b Used
1864-79 2d ERROR OF COLOUR in MAUVE, wmk CC, perf 12½, characteristic pastel shade, well-centred with light '21' (?) numeral of Vasse. A really fine and attractive example of this famous rarity, apparently resulting from the use of the wrong (2d) plate during printing of a supply of the 6d value. The mistake was not noticed by De La Rue, and an estimated 8-10 sheets were issued in Jan 1879, with usage recorded at Perth and a few other offices. [So far as we know this was the only occasion on which DLR made such an error in printing Colonial stamps of any country, if Tobago SG 24c is excluded]. BPA cert (2014).
