TRISTAN DA CUNHA 1929 SG. Cover

Stock Code: G1120453

1929 (FEB 24) cover to U.S.A., carried by 'S.S. Duchess of Atholl' which left the island on 24 February for London. Signed and dated by the Rev R. Pooley (chaplain on Tristan March 1927 to Feb 1929, who returned to the U.K. on this voyage), and with a unique combination franking of G.B. 1924 Wembley 1½d and U.S.A. 1922-32 ½c and 1½c, each with typewritten 'TRISTAN DA CUNHA' overprint (three lines on U.S., one line on G.B.), the U.S.A. 1½c tied by 'LONDON F.S./PAQUEBOT' (dated 'MAR (18) 1929) cancel in transit. Some soiling and cover faults, nevertheless a spectacular and desirable item, and an essential part of the Tristan story. Only six such 'Pooley' covers with typewritten opts are stated to have been produced (extract from Crabb's book enclosed), and the two 'Cole' covers, with straightforward GB frankings, realised £10925 and £6900 at auction in 1998.
