CEYLON 1935 SG368/77 Essay Eight composite B.W. bicoloured Artist's essays for the 1935 Pictorial issue, frames and vignettes entirely hand-painted

Stock Code: P223015075

1935 series of eight composite bicoloured artist's essays submitted by Bradbury Wilkinson for the 1935-36 Pictorial issue, comprising 2c black and blue-green "ANCIENT GUARD-STONES", 3c deep green and slate "ADAM'S PEAK", 6c blue and brown "COCONUT PALMS", 10c blue-green and violet "ANCIENT MOON-STONE", 20c deep blue and orange-red "WILD ELEPHANTS", 30c brown and green "KANDY", 50c deep blue and black "SIGIRIYA" and 50c black and magenta "STATE COUNCIL BUILDING". Each stamp-size with recess-printed crown, three-quarter facing KGV portrait and vignette caption tipped in (three separate pieces), while the frames and vignettes are ENTIRELY HAND-PAINTED with extraordinary delicacy, and details picked out in Chinese white. A unique and wonderful series, unadopted in 1935 (although the 3c is close to the issued design (printed by De La Rue)), but with the two 50c essays subsequently adapted by B.W. for the 1938 10c value (SG 389) and 1947 6c New Constitution (SG 402). Absolutely beautiful and of the highest artistic quality. Ex Harmer London 15/5/1996, lot 22.
