BURMA 1858 SG. Cover from Moulmein to Glasgow recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Ava

Stock Code: P212016928

1858 (19 JAN) unfranked outer wrapper from MOULMEIN to Glasgow, endorsed "Via Marseilles" on face, with framed "INDIA UNPAID" and M/S "6(a)" on both face and reverse. On reverse, large part "MOULMEIN" despatch cds (in black), red Calcutta transit cds (27 JAN), and very fine London transit cds and Glasgow arrival cds, both dated "MY 11 58", the delay explained by choice strike of the italic two-line "Saved from the wreck / of the Ava" cachet. Typical filing folds, nevertheless a particularly fine example of mail from this famous maritime disaster, with a very rare and desirable Burma origin. [Carried from Calcutta (departed Feb 10th) on S.S. Ava, bound for Trincomalee (Ceylon) via Madras, which was wrecked on rocks nearing Trincomalee on 16th Feb. Most of the cargo and mail were recovered in subsequent salvage operations, with the mail eventually arriving in London on May 11th, where the cachet was applied.]
