BRITISH LEVANT 1911 SG25/a Mint

Stock Code: P201009548

1911-13 KEVII 1pi on 2½d bright blue, type 4 surcharge on Harrison printing, perf 14, upper left corner block of ten (5x2), the top row with normal surcharge (but misplaced upwards and falling above the value tablet), the lower row with exceptionally clear SURCHARGE DOUBLE, ONE ALBINO, o.g. with fresh colour. Minor reinforcement between stamps 3-4 in lower row, and upper row with crease at foot of stamps 3-5, otherwise fine and unmounted. An extraordinary positional multiple of great technical interest, the likely explanation being that the upper row originally escaped surcharge, perhaps as a result of being folded back, and that the sheet was then passed through the press again, but with the lower rows deliberately blanked out. In confirmation of this hypothesis, the position of the albino impression on the lower row (2½mm above the inked surcharge, and slightly to right) corresponds to that of the (misplaced) surcharge on the top row, and evidently derives from the same second operation. [Accompanying BPA cert (1968) is somewhat garbled (giving the date as 1905, without SG number, and wrongly stating "corner block of 12"), but worthy of preservation as one of the earliest certificates for a "surcharge double, one albino".]
