PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 1861 SG5 Used

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 1861 SG5 Used
1861 2d rose on yellowish toned paper, ROULETTED, centred to top with virtually complete roulettes on three sides (except at foot), lightly cancelled by 8-bar oval of Charlottetown. Minor creasing of little consequence and mentioned strictly for accuracy, since none of the known examples is perfect. An excessively rare stamp, being one of just five recorded, of which only three are in private hands (the others being in the Royal Collection and the Tapling collection in the British Library), first discovered by Donald A. King in 1888, and widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and instantly recognisable stamps of British North America. Ex Melat and Tomlinson, signed on reverse by P. L. Pemberton and with clear RPS (1986) and 2015 BPA certs, the latter mentioning "small corner crease at upper right". (cat £22,000)
