1898 Pictorial set of 13 to 5s, IMPERFORATE (and unpunched) Waterlow printer's samples in the characteristic unissued colours, comprising ½d brown, 1d black and green, 2d indigo, 2½d grey on toned paper (inscr "WAKITIPU"), 3d purple, 4d green, 5d blue-green, 6d rose-carmine, 8d purple-brown, 9d purple-brown on toned paper, 1s slate-purple, 2s orange-vermilion, 5s black, apparently individually printed from the dies (1d clearly showing vignette frame lines around outer frame, 5s showing guide cross lines at each corner), with small part o.g, hinged to part album page. Only 2 or 3 sets known, apparently printed in the early stages of the usage of these samples. Illustrated in Derek Diamond's "The 1898 Pictorial Issue of New Zealand" p.70. Ex M. Burberry, who noted that no value could be plated to the miniature sheets of 9.
