1898 Pictorial set of 13 to 5s, IMPERFORATE (and unpunched) Waterlow printer's samples in the characteristic unissued colours, comprising ½d brown, 1d black and green, 2d indigo, 2½d grey on toned paper (inscr "WAKATIPU"), 3d purple, 4d green, 5d blue-green, 6d rose-carmine, 8d purple-brown, 9d purple-brown on toned paper, 1s slate-purple, 2s orange-vermilion, 5s black, affixed to page "2." from a Waterlow sample book (140x162mm), neatly arranged with each labelled with printed "S.T." (= "Sample Type" or "Specimen Type") number and provided with a hand drawn frame. Insignificant traces of soiling, still a very fine and most attractive item. A rare survival in this form. Illustrated in Derek Diamond's "The 1898 Pictorial Issue of New Zealand" p.76. Ex M. Burberry (who noted that each stamp exhibits plating characteristics proving the stamps originated from sheetlets of nine, with each position noted in pencil on reverse).
