NEW ZEALAND 1895 SG246/59 Essay
1895 Pictorial series of 11 beautiful handpainted unadopted essays (each c. 38x25mm on card), comprising 1d "Kiwi" in green, 2d "Captain Cook" in orange-brown, 2½d "Milford Sound" in rosine, 3d "Falls" in yellow-brown, 4d "Rev. Samuel Marsden" in sepia, 5d "Mount Egmont" in violet, 6d "Maori Chief" in olive-green, 8d "Lake Wakatipu" in blue, 1s "Maori Life" in magenta, 2s "Lake Wakatipu" in greenish blue, and 5s "Lake Manapouri" in sepia. Prepared in connection with the competition for a planned series of postage and revenue stamps, ultimately issued in 1898, each of which should "include a representation of characteristic or notable New Zealand scenery or genre". Odd small imperfections but a unique and highly attractive set which forms part of the fascinating story of how the new pictorial set evolved and developed. Illustrated in Derek Diamond's "The 1898 Pictorial issue of New Zealand" p.10. Ex J.Currie.
