NEW SOUTH WALES 1870 SG88/117 Proof
1870 (c.) series of seven die proofs, printed by De La Rue from the original Perkins Bacon dies, comprising the 1854-55 'Diadem' 5d in mauve, 8d in red-brown and 1s in rose-carmine, on thin partly gummed wove, each with 3mm margin at top and bottom (cut close at sides) and the 1856 'Diadem' 1d in black on India paper with 3mm margins and the 1d in deep scarlet, 2d deep blue and 3d yellow-green each on thin gummed wove with 4-5mm margins. A beautiful group of the highest rarity, believed to have been produced for display at either the 1867 Paris exhibition or the 1872 South Kensington exhibition. Considered to be one of two sets in private hands, the other (ex 'Carrington', Wiggins and Robson Lowe) being on card (and lacking the 1d black), with a third set in the British Library. Ex Hutson, and described on p.37 of his book.
