LONG ISLAND 1916 SG12/var Mint

LONG ISLAND 1916 SG12/var Mint
1916 (7 May) 1d mauve, typewritten (carbon) on thin horiz laid and initialled by Pirie-Gordon in red ink, upper right corner block of 4 (pos. 3-4/7-8), lower right stamp showing extraneous 'L' in frame at foot, fresh unused. Insignificant marginal creasing mentioned for accuracy but an attractive, and surely unique positional multiple. This 'extra L' variety was known to Gibbs only from a used example of the 1d red (SG 13), with the position and plate unknown. The plate must be either 1, 3, 4, 5 or 7. [Twenty-two sheets of 20 produced (two each from plates 1-11), of which only 148 unused examples recorded by Gibbs (including three sheets of 20).]
