The obverse is derived from an engraving by François Schilleman, commissioned by the States General, from a design by Daniel Heinsius. The design was also used for the painting by Pouwel Weyts now in the Stedelijk Museum in Dordtrecht. The medal comes in several varieties such as with and without a dog in the foreground, with and without signature of IvB ( Jan van Bylaer), differences in the ceiling, the mountain with either three or six pilgrims.
