1873 Officers letter. Fine cover prepaid with a 6d grey Pl.12 tied by a barred "10" in circle cancellation. (Dubus type 1 rarity H* i.e. recorded on stamp only.) Addressed to Aberdeenshire and backstamped at Rhynie DE.8.1873. Written by Lt. Cosmo G. Gordon, (Royal Marines) serving aboard the 31 gun wooden screw frigate HMS"Topaze" that was at that time stationed off the Iberian Peninsula. Envelope bears witness to various transit and opening imperfections, nevertheless a wonderful example of Britains maritime postal heritage.
