GB 1855 SG21 Pl.12 Cover to China
1858 Overseas mail. Very fine small envelope to Shanghai, prepaid at the 11d per ¼oz rate for a cover routed via France with a 1d Red-brown Pl.12 cancelled by a CROWN/STREET type XVIII Scots Local to cover the inland postage, the balance paid in cash as indicated "11d" in red manuscript. Glasgow and London "PAID" datestamps alongside the adhesive for MY.25+26.1855 and a Hong Kong receiving cds on reverse for JU.26.1855 (JU erroneously used for July)
Routed via Marseilles the cover was carried overland through France, then by P&O steamers "Valetta" (Marseille-Alexandria), "Bombay" (Suez-Galle), "Singapore" (Galle-Hong Kong) and "Erin" (Hong Kong-Shanghai). A rare early cover to China, especially with the sole use of a single 1d stamp. Most unusual.
