1840 1d Rainbow trial. Very fine part sheet of 10 impressions from the fugitive ink trials (September 1840) that were sent by Joshua Bacon to Rowland Hill, printed in red brown on white wove paper "No.9 Plain paper ". Stamps 3,4,7,8,11 & 12 cancelled "No 712" and tested with "Tartaric Acid", "Potash", "Prussic Acid", "Creosote" and "Turps". Endorsed in the hand of Joshua Bacon, the "A1" at upper left indicating his percieved "order of goodness". Rare, only 9 sheets were used of which only 5 survive in private hands.
