France Anglo- 1385 AD Ecu d'or - (AEF) Hammered Gold
Obv: Crowned arms of France (three fleurs-d-lis), 'KAROLVS DEI GRATIA FRANCORVM REX

Con: Cross fleury in a quatrefoil crowns in angles, five pointed star in centre

Superb large French medieval gold coin – the cross fleury an archetypal medieval symbol. Charles VI called the Beloved and the Mad, was the King of France from 1380 to 1422, as a member of the House of Valois. His bouts with madness, which seem to have begun in 1392, led to quarrels among the French royal family, which were exploited by the neighbouring powers of England and Burgundy. By the end of his reign much of France was under foreign occupation.
