England, Charles I silver Halfcrown
Very good condition piece, attractively patinated with the sharp details of an early milled coin. Nicholas Briot, came to Britain from France and joined the mint as chief engraver in 1628 during the reign of Charles I. His coinage was of an extremely high standard, in contrast with the hand-made hammered coinage which was generally of poor quality. The first series was minted in 1631-32 and included all the gold denominations.

King crowned and mounted on horse left, in full armour withsword in right hand, CAROLVS D G MAGN BRITANN FR ET HIB REX.

Rev:
crowned garnished Royal Arms, CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, (I reign under the auspices of Christ).
