C.G.H. - MAFEKING 1900 SG3 Cover

C.G.H. - MAFEKING 1900 SG3 Cover
1900 (MR 23) cover (opened out for display) to Lady Vyvyan in Cornwall, franked at 1s for the northern route via Bulawayo by 1900 (23 Mar) 3d on 1d carmine 'Block of four' (sadly reduced to a block of 3 by the removal of the upper right stamp, leaving the stamp below defective at top), tied by two very clear strikes of 'MR 23' cds on FIRST DAY OF ISSUE, with another strike alongside. Backstamps of Bulawayo (4 APR), Helston (MY 13) and Mawgan (MY 14). Despite the faults a highly important and historic cover, with few such first day usages extant, and from Col Vyvyan, the Town Commandant during the siege. The stamps are from the 'first setting', showing distinctive 'Thick F in MAFEKING' and 'Thick second E in BESIEGED' on the left pair.
