Anglo Saxon Edward the Confessor silver penny of Hastings 10

Anglo Saxon Edward the Confessor silver penny of Hastings 10
Obv. Helmeted, draped, bearded bust right holding cruciform sceptre in right hand, EWDPERD REX.

Rev. Short cross voided, each limb terminating in three crescents, in centre an annulet, BRID:O:N HESTIEN (Brid at Hastings)

Outstanding example 'condition-wise' very well struck and sharp portrait with beautiful grey toning resulting a superb portrait of this Saxon king. In 1042 Edward 'the Confessor' became King, he was the surviving son of Ethelred and his second wife, Emma and was a half-brother of Hardicanute. With few rivals, Canute's line was extinct and Edward's only male relatives were two nephews in exile.
