1859 (AP 1) outer wrapper from St Johns to Baltimore, 'Tucker' correspondence, endorsed 'pr Mail via Halifax', franked by 1857-64 4d scarlet-vermilion, good to very large margins except a little close at foot, tied by light barred oval, with red despatch cds (overstruck by '5/BOSTON/BR.PKT.' entry cds dated 'AP 10') alongside. Vertical filing folds (clear of stamp and postmarks), but very fine for this usage, the stamp a particularly attractive example with lovely colour. Ex Gross, Hubbard and Carey Fox with RPS (1968) and V.G. Greene (2001) certs.

1860 5d Venetian red on medium hand-made paper, clear margins, with crisp part strike (at upper left) of the Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED' handstamp. From pos. 6 of the original 2x3 block of six supplied to Ormond Hill in 1861, being a newly discovered example that was unknown to Jaffe and therefore not recorded in his 1998 book 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon'. Minor traces of thinning (of little significance since this is one of only two surviving examples in private hands, with a third in the Royal Collection, and not mentioned by clear 2012 BPA cert) but fine appearance. A fascinating stamp of the highest rarity. (cat £13,000).
