1881 (Feb) 'HALF-PENNY' (type 3) on 1d red, plate 215, lettered 'PA', with spectacular vertical misplacement of surcharge (divided between top and bottom of stamp), large part o.g. with very fresh colour. Off-centre with creasing, and a spot of what seems to be excess surcharge ink on the face, nevertheless a most extraordinary example from this rare plate, of which probably only one or two sheets were surcharged. It seems possible that paper creasing prior to surcharging (and even perforating ?) could actually have caused this bizarre phenomenon. Ex North (RL 2/5/56, lot 188).

Unique thus (see Handbook p.173), and to be interpreted either as a change intended (but not adopted) in 1920, or as an essay for the 1924(-28) issue, when the change from word to numeral was made (for SG 106).
