Despatch and arrival backstamps, the latter (MR 23 63) in red. The wrapper a little soiled and wrinkled, but neat and a rare stamp on cover. Holcombe cert (1995).

1864 2d blue, worn state of plate I, imperforate plate proof on thick unwmkd wove, block of 18 (9x2) comprising rejoined blocks of 8 and 10 from R19-20/4-12. Four pinholes (only two affecting impressions), some vertical creases and the right hand pair touched at right, but a spectacular and important multiple, taken from the sheet printed by Davies for despatch to Perkins Bacon, with a request for a new plate for this value. 1864-7 2d blue (plate II), wmk large star, perf 12½, a splendid range of 21 examples from different positions of the lower part of the plate, as retouched by James Macgregor Lloyd in late 1867, comprising R18/3 fresh large part o.g., and R14/8, 16/10, 17/1 & 2, 17/10, 18/2, 18/4, 18/6, 18/9, R19/1, 6, 9, 12, '13' and R20/2, 5, 7 - 10, used. Odd tones and imperfections, but mostly fine to very fine, with a good range of shades and some fine cancels. A fascinating study, neatly arranged on two pages. [Plate II was introduced in December 1865, but subsequent damage to the nickel plating led to the need for retouching]. (cat £1325).
