1897 (MR 25) registered official cover (with blue embossed '(Arms)/GOVERNMENT HOUSE/FALKLAND ISLANDS' logo on flap) to Lausanne, Switzerland, franked by two horizontal pairs of 1878-79 6d blue-green (each from left of sheet with imperf margin), tied by two strikes of type F2 cds (spaced '9 7') and most unusually also with type F3 cds at left, with '(Crown)/REGISTERED' mark at lower left and London transit ds (25 AP 97) at right. Very fine Lausanne arrival backstamp of '27.IV.97'. Overfranked, with light horizontal fold, but a most attractive and desirable cover, carried by Kosmos S.S. 'Herodot'. The addition of the second (type F3) cds may have been intended to make the date clearer, or may represent a late recognition that this was a registered letter - note the bold pencil 'R' at centre left on the face.

Carried on the 'Neko'. The front with unobtrusive tear (backed by card) at right and foot, still fine and attractive appearance. A very rare and important item, with only ONE pre-UPU (prior to 1/1/1891) registered stamped cover to England recorded by Heijtz (apparently at 6d rate). This clearly commercial item would suggest that the registration fee was in fact still 4d (+ 4d postage).

Carried on the 'Totmes', with Galveston arrival backstamp of 'MAR 9 93' (duplex type with 'ARRIVED LATE' and year inverted). A rare and attractive franking with this cork obliterator, and clearly commercial although apparently overpaid for the 4d foreign rate. [The fact that the stamps are overlapping may indicate an initial failed attempt to prepay only the 2½d rate !].
