1861 (JA 29) large part front (with part upper flap) from Charlottetown to St. Johns, NEWFOUNDLAND, franked at the 9d rate by 1861 (1 Jan) 3d blue and 6d yellow-green first issue (perf 9), tied by two strikes of 8-bar oval, with red crayon '4' credit mark and part red Charlottetown cds alongside, and fine large part type P6 despatch cds on the flap. The 3d stamp with shallow perfs at foot, but both otherwise completely sound (rare with this issue) with fine fresh colours. A very rare and important first issue usage to this destination, and early (first month).

The cover with faults (a little reduced at left, repaired tear through face panel, minor soiling), and the stamp separated by scissors causing partly trimmed perfs, still a neat and rare single franking of the first issue 6d.

1861 6d yellow-green, perf 9, used on cover (yellow envelope) to Woburn, M(aine), Flint correspondence, paying 6d rate to U.S.A., tied in transit by '1' oval grid of St. John, New Brunswick, with partial St. John cds on reverse. The stamp with unobtrusive NW corner fault (crease causing tiny tears), and the cover with damage at lower right (repaired using part of the flap), but undoubtedly a unique usage. The only P.E.I. cover known to us (any issue) with the stamp cancelled outside the island. Ex Dale-Lichtenstein (sale 5, Harmer NY 19/5/1969, lot 1012) with RPS cert (1970) which incorrectly (!) identifies the stamp as SG 25... [The regular rate to the mainland was from Charlottetown to Pictou, Nova Scotia, but another route, from Cape Traverse to Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick, was sometimes used, mainly in the winter].
