1882 2½d red-brown, wmk CA, from R1/1 of a pane, showing duty plate severely misplaced to right, and freak misperforation, the first strike of the comb having been placed too high, large part o.g. The stamp is 26mm high instead of the normal 24½mm, and partially imperforate at the bottom of the vertical sides. Trivial soiling and creasing but a spectacular and most remarkable stamp, representing a very rare lapse from grace by De La Rue, who prided themselves on the highest standards of production and quality control. The left pane in a pale shade, from an early printing (perforated through bottom margin), showing variety 'large 2 in 2½ with slanting foot' at R7/1 only. The right pane in a deep shade, from a later printing (perforated through top margin), showing variety 'large 2 in 2½ with slanting foot' at both R3/1 and R7/1, and also showing the 'damaged second A' at R1/6 and the 'Top left triangle detached' at R3/3. Minor separation but lovely condition. Rare and fascinating items, both ex Surtees and Toeg. (cat £1667+)

Taxed on arrival with 'T in circle', the deficiency paid by Cayman Is 1932 Centenary ½d green and 1½d red-orange, each tied by 'SE 2 1933' Georgetown cds. St John's Antigua transit cds and further Georgetown cds on reverse. A few peripheral cover tones (not affecting stamps), still an attractive cover.
