1863 (MY 28) official outer wrapper to Valletta, addressed to the office of Primary Education and endorsed 'In Servizio di S.M' (= O.H.M.S.') at upper right, franked by 1860-63 ½d buff on white paper, no wmk, 3rd printing, wing-margin at right, tied by mostly very fine light strike of code 'A' duplex, which leaves profile entirely clear. The stamp with odd short or faintly toned perfs mentioned for accuracy, but very fresh and remarkably deep colour. An attractive and very fine cover, much rarer than those with SG 1 or 2. Typical centring, with light horizontal creases and separation between upper pair, but a great rarity, being one of only three recorded blocks of 4 of SG 3/a (plus a defective block of 9). Some light toning (just affecting perfs) and stamp with minor bend, still a neat and striking cover, with bright true coloour. 1863-81 ½d yellow-buff, wmk CC, perf 14, 17th or 19th printing, block of 12 (6x2) being the top two rows of he lower left pane with wing-margin at right and complete 'MALTA _ POSTAGE ONE HALF-PENNY' inscription in interpane margin above, large part o.g. (five stamps unmounted). The interpane margin ragged at top, and R2/2 with thin, but a very scarce and impressive positional multiple with lovely fresh colour. 1863-81 ½d yellow, wmk CC, perf 14, variety WMK INVERTED, nicely cancelled by part (horizontal oval) 'A25'. Trivial wrinkles and faint traces of perf toning, still fine colour and rare. Smith 79851. Both the type of cancel, and the presence of faint vertical 'laid lines' in the paper prove that this example actually comes from the April 1880 printing (supply 22), traditionally identified as SG 12 ('bright orange - yellow'), but we believe that that printing showed considerable shade variation.
