1889 (Nov - Dec 6) piece from De La Rue day book, with stamp-size duty die proofs in black on glazed card for the 1890 (-92) set of 8 to 96c, arranged as two blocks of 4, the 2c to10c with M/S date 'Nov' at right, the 13c to 96c with 'Dec 6', and further endorsement '60 from each' between the two groups. Each 'block' with further RED M/S endorsement 'Feb 10 90', indicating the invoice date. The unique and important archival record for the first issue. 1893 (1 Jan) 3c on 4c carmine and green, type 2 surcharge, complete pane of 60 (6x10) without margins, showing two impressions of the setting of 30 (6x5), brilliant o.g. (all but two stamps unmounted). While the setting is clearly the same (with many repeated diagnostic flaws), it is noticeable that the 's' of 'cents' is level on R5/6, but considerably raised on R10/6, suggesting that the two blocks were surcharged at different times. Very scarce in such a multiple, and lovely condition.

1897-1900 6c, 75c, 1r50 2r25, opt 'SPECIMEN' (type D12), each in vertical strip of 5 (severed into pairs and strips of 3) as despatched from Bern, with additional 'ULTRAMAR' H/S in blue, applied in Lisbon for distribution to Portuguese Colonies, o.g. (pairs) or unmounted o.g. (strips) The 6c strip with traces of toning, still very fine, the 75c, 1r50 and 2r25 all matching from pos. 35/59 of the pane, and showing the constant variety 'broken M' (pos. 41 of the setting) on the lower stamp of the vertical pairs, and in superb condition. Only 35 examples of each value ever received the 'ULTRAMAR' H/S, and the combination of broken M and 'ULTRAMAR' is always by definition unique. A wonderful group. (N.B. It is unlikely that the other other values of the set, distributed on different occasions, could have survived in this form).
