GOLD COAST 1879 (COVER) SG7

1879 (OC 4) cover from Cape Coast Castle to U.S.A., endorsed 'Via Liverpool' and franked by 1876-84 4d magenta, tied by '556' numeral, with fine 'PAID AT CAPE COAST CASTLE' double-circle despatch cds in BLACK (scarce thus) and red 'PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR PACKET' entry cds (7 NO 79) alongside. '2' and '1' accountancy marks in brown-red crayon on face, New York transit duplex on reverse. Recipient's docket on reverse identifies sender as 'Capt J. S. Sanborn, Elmina, Sept 29th 1879'. Minor cover bends but a neat and attractive single franking, with any Gold Coast cover from the 1870s rare. Ex Rowell (CRL 28/10/92, lot 91).

1893 (OC 21) registered cover from Elmina to Banbury, Ackerman correspondence, franked by 1884-91 2½d ultramarine and orange horizontal pair (overpaying by ½d the 4½d rate - 2½d postage + 2d registration), tied by two very fine strikes of cds in BLUE-BLACK, with another equally fine strike at upper left. 'R in oval' in RED and oval Liverpool entry ds (22 NO 93) on face. Cape Coast (OC 22) and Banbury (NO 23) backstamps. Trivial imperfections (part of flap missing) but fine and most attractive, with registration lines in green crayon and unusual with the red registration H/S.

1898 (NO 26) registered cover from KUMASI to Banbury, Ackerman correspondence, franked at 7d (2d registration + double 2½d postage) by 1884-91 2½d ultramarine and orange horizontal pair and 1898-1902 1d dull mauve and rose x 2, tied by two strikes of double-ring cds, with another strike and superb 'R in oval' at left, and Liverpool entry ds (31 DE 98) below. Cape Coast (DE 7 98) and Banbury (JA 1 99) backstamps. Trivial soiling but a most attractive cover, scarce from this office and with a desirable mixed issue franking.

1899 (DE 18) printed commercial cover from Kpong to Wolverhampton, Rosser correspondence, franked by 1898-1902 1d dull mauve and rose, tied by superb 'KPONG' cds, with another strike alongside. Accra (DE 20) and Wolverhampton (JA 16 00) backstamps. Face panel with small central abrasion but highly attractive, with blue and red printed address, further enhanced by private sender's and recipient's handstamps in shades of violet (two on face, three on reverse). A scarce office.
