1875 4d magenta, wmk CC, perf 12½, brilliant large part o.g. Trivial mark on gum mentioned for accuracy, still very fine for this scarce stamp. (cat £450).

1875 6d orange, perf 12½, crisply cancelled by large part '556' numeral of Cape Coast Castle. Really fine for this.

1879 (OC 4) cover from Cape Coast Castle to U.S.A., endorsed 'Via Liverpool' and franked by 1876-84 4d magenta, tied by '556' numeral, with fine 'PAID AT CAPE COAST CASTLE' double-circle despatch cds in BLACK (scarce thus) and red 'PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR PACKET' entry cds (7 NO 79) alongside. '2' and '1' accountancy marks in brown-red crayon on face, New York transit duplex on reverse. Recipient's docket on reverse identifies sender as 'Capt J. S. Sanborn, Elmina, Sept 29th 1879'. Minor cover bends but a neat and attractive single franking, with any Gold Coast cover from the 1870s rare. Ex Rowell (CRL 28/10/92, lot 91).
