Fraser's Top 30 Selling Autographs Index Update 6 of 7 - August 2009

“My Top Picks” from the Chief Executive – Number 6 of 7

Better than the one in my own collection

It pains me to offer this item to you today.

You see, I bought a signed document of this famous Royal last year…

And this one is better than mine!

Today’s “Secret 7” top pick appears at “Number 16” in our “Top 30 Sellers” index.

My signed document hangs in my hallway at home. I bought it because I live in a Victorian house in Guernsey. Not only that, our house looks out over Victoria Tower…

Queen Victoria was the first reigning monarch to visit our island of Guernsey in August 1846. Guernsey built a tower to commemorate the visit.

The view from my garden…

Queen Victoria was probably the most popular monarch of all time. She was certainly the longest reigning British monarch, lasting almost 64 years.

Victoria’s reign saw the great expansion of the British Empire and marked a time when Britain was a global power rivalled by none.

Not only Guernsey built a tower…

There are building and statues commemorating Queen Victoria all over the world, including Australia, Canada and Hong Kong.

The Victorian era holds a certain romantic appeal and fascination partly assisted by the works of Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens.

Queen Victoria Early Letter

Complete letter dated 28th of August 1848 on gold embossed paper, Osbourne House stationery. Victoria writes to Arthur congratulating him on his birthday and thanking him for his last letter.

She also mentions how everything was quiet in England and Ireland and that she was thinking of travelling to Scotland to get more invigorated.

Early letters of Victoria are exceedingly rare. In very fine condition.

Price: £1,250 (SPECIAL OFFER PRICE: £1,125)
Stock code: 75158

The presentation of the item is excellent, hence my annoyance at buying a previous example which isn’t as good as this.

Also, this is an early example which is much more difficult to find making it the perfect store of wealth as an investment.

Victoria was only 29 years old when she wrote this letter. The image sold with this piece depicts Queen Victoria in her prime.

Queen Victoria wrote this letter at the same time penny blacks, penny reds and tuppeny blues were being used to post letters. It’s odd to think that a mint penny black sells for £10,000 today, whereas a letter signed by Queen Victoria costs little over £1,000.

I find it amazing that we can still acquire signed documents from the longest serving monarch of Great Britain - dating back over 160 years - for this price.

It seems like a “no-brainer” to me…
