World War II Collection

LEESE, OLIVER -- Military

A superb personal collection of over 200 black and white photographs of varying sizes, mounted into two large albums, which covers the period of Leese's life from 1906-1914 and 1927-1938. Leese was one of the most distinguished British soldiers of World War II, who commanded the Eighth Army after Montgomery. The two albums contain many early photographs depicting Leese and his fellow students in team photographs for cricket, rugby and football group photographs alongside trophies. The majority of the images have been neatly annotated in ink by Leese to the pages beneath the images, identifying the date and occasion as well as the subjects and the individuals portrayed. The photographs are of a high quality and both albums display an excellent personal insight into Leese's career immediately prior to World War II. A few pages have been neatly removed. Slight age wear to the spine, otherwise in fine condition.

WWII ESCAPE MAP -- Military

A large authentic silk map of Stockholm/Oslo (approx. 2ft sq.) from the Cold War-era. The map bears the date (June, 1953), revision updates and the word "RESTRICTED" printed along the border. The map shows cities, towns, villages, population density, elevations, roads, railroads and fresh water locations. The British issued these maps to help air crews and covert forces escape capture after being shot down. The maps were printed on specially treated silk and were sewn into the linings of clothes or placed in heels of boots. Unaffected by water and easy to conceal, these maps provided essential information. A fascinating piece, with original heavy folds from being in the pockets of pilots, otherwise in excellent condition.
