Invest in Rare Stamps
Why invest in rare stamps?
Today, by weight, rare stamps are the world’s most valuable commodity; the highest price ever reached at auction for a single stamp is $9.5 million for the British Guiana one-cent magenta and the global stamps market is worth over £6 billion p.a. Stanley Gibbons is world-renowned as the global authority in stamps. Established in 1856, we were awarded the Royal Warrant by King George V in 1914 for services to Philately and it is an honour we still hold today.
The world’s first adhesive postage stamp was the Penny Black. It was issued on Queen Victoria’s instructions on 6th May 1840. Despite its fame, the Penny Black isn’t actually a ‘rare’ stamp. It was designed to make communications across the British Isles and Empire simpler so approximately 68 million stamps were issued at the time. But of course only a fraction of that number survived in mint condition.
